Pashmina refers to a type of fine cashmere wool. The wool comes from the soft downy undercoat of goats indigenous to high altitudes of the Himalayas. The pashmina wool is extremely light, soft and warm. It is often combined with silk to give the scarf or shawl a more shiny appearance. The wool is collected from the goats each Spring. The finer the wool the more expensive it is. Many shawls that are sold as pashminas are not made of pashmina wool at all. So take care when shopping! Articles made from pashmina wool will be labelled as cashmere.
